Step Forward
(Written on a napkin at 36,000 feet somewhere over America.)
***Unfortunately, I couldn’t get Substack to present this poem with either no space between the lines of each couplet or indented second lines. Hence the forward / slash to mark line breaks.
Step forward, my son. / Step forward when all around you turn and run.
Step forward when the storm draws too near; / Step forward to defend those most dear.
Step forward when the water is deep and cold; / Step forward to defend the weak and old.
Step forward when the sun wilts the weak; / Step forward to defend the mild and meek.
Step forward when the siren makes its sound; / Step forward to defend this sacred ground.
Step forward when the mighty lose your trust; / Step forward to defend what’s just.
Step forward when you’re misunderstood; / Step forward to defend what’s good.
Step forward when there is no one but you; / Step forward to defend what’s true.
Step forward when too many wear the face of fear; / Step forward to defend those you most revere.
Step forward when death’s shadow casts its pall; / Step forward though you might falter and fall.
Step forward when you feel most unloved; / Step forward to defend your best beloved.
Step forward to your hill and make your stand; / Step forward to defend the fort unmanned.
Step forward despite life’s common sorrows; / Step forward to defend the humble heroes.
Step forward through life’s petty wars; / Step forward, my son, and honor is yours.
Step forward, my son. Step forward.
I would be grateful if you shared this poem with family and friends.

Not bad for a redneck…
quote:
Happy the man, and happy he alone,
He, who can call today his own;
He, who, secure within, can say
Tomorrow, do thy worst, for I have
Lived today
