Republican Arkansas Sen. Tom Cotton introduced a bill on Thursday that would prevent schools from aiding and concealing a student’s “gender transition” from parents.

The bill, called the Empower Parents to Protect Their Kids Act, seeks to stop federally funded K-12 schools from facilitating a student’s “gender transition” without parental knowledge.

“Schools should never be allowed to impose radical, harmful ideologies on children — especially without parents’ knowledge and consent,” Cotton said in a news release announcing the legislation.

Western Carolina University (WCU) recently added more than 10 pronouns to its Canvas student portal, a curriculum management platform. 

 The 12 new pronoun combinations include (E/Eir), (Fae/Faer), (Per/Pers), (Ve/Ver), (Xe/Xem), and (Ze/Zir), but both some university employees admitted that they were unaware some configurations existed. 

Campus Reform obtained a September 14 email from Elaine "Eli" Collins-Brown, director of Coulter Faculty Commons at WCU, which stated that the update was the result of a professor escalating student requests for the change.

Red states, either completely controlled by Republicans or where the GOP controls at least the legislature or the governor’s mansion, fund public universities that host transgender surgeries or provide kids with puberty blockers, according to an analysis from The College Fix.

At least thirteen red states host LGBT clinics affiliated with public universities, according to data compiled using the Human Rights Campaign’s tracker.

Other red states host pediatric transgender clinics including the University of Utah Health and UNC Children’s Hospital in North Carolina.

West Virginia University, University of Virginia, Penn State and the Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh, affiliated with Pitt, will help children permanently block their puberty or remove healthy reproductive organs. A University of Arkansas-affiliated children’s hospital also provides “gender-affirming care” and the University of Alabama at Birmingham’s hospital does too.
